Titanic Science Investigation

27th Mar 2018

As part of their learning about the Titanic, Primary Seven pupils took part in a science investigation about what makes ships sink and float.

  • We talked about 3 reasons why objects float or sink.
    • Buoyancy
    • Density
    • Archimedes’ Principle

But…why don’t ships skink? They are really heavy!

The pupils used a piece of aluminum foil to make a boat. Then, they put their boats into the water, and began to put marbles into it. They counted to see how many marbles they could put on their boat before it sank.

All the pupils came up with excellent designs and had great discussion about scientific concepts like buoyancy, surface area, displacement and up thrust.
